Upsets Abound in Crazy ACC Weekend
User Rating: / 0

As the ACC season begins to wind down, three major upsets in the ACC shake things up at the top of the divisions. With losses by Virginia Tech, Florida State, and Boston College, things begin to open up for a few teams in the middle of the pack, and hope begins to find its way to a few teams that formerly had little. Two teams are now tied at the top of the Coastal Division, and two teams sit within one game.

In the Atlantic Division, Florida State remains at the top, but two teams remain within a game of them and look to breathe down their neck. Let's take a peek into the ACC in week 10 and find out what happened and what it means for the remaining three weeks of college football action.

TCU earns outright Mountain West title

TCU It's been nearly 50 years since Texas Christian clinched an outright conference championship. Not since 1958 had they been on top, all by themselves.

Well, the Horned Frogs, now No. 18 in the nation, got that experience Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas, as they beat Colorado State 33-6 to win the Mountain West Conference title outright.

TCU (9-1, 6-0) had shared conference titles in 1959 and 1994 in the Southwest Conference, 1999 and 2000 in the Western Athletic Conference, and 2002 in Conference USA. The conference-hopping Horned Frogs are now two games up on Colorado State (5-4, 4-2) and BYU (5-4, 4-2) with one league game to go.

THE SEC TODAY: WEEK TEN.

Previous Week Overview: The Florida - Georgia game came out exactly as predicted last week as the Gators took advantage of the Shockley injury and played great defensively in a 14-10 triumph. The win keeps the Gators slim SEC East hopes alive although Georgia had a game they could lose coming in. With a 1 game lead, the Bulldogs can now win out and head to Atlanta for the championship game.

In other action, South Carolina pulled out a tough win at Tennessee as the overrated Vols continue to struggle at quarterback. I predicted a close game but even I thought Tennessee had enough to get the win at home. The coaching staff continues to be the worst in division 1-A football unable to generate any offense even against the conferences lesser teams. As for the Gamecocks, this is a huge win for Steve Spurrier as he attempts to attract future recruits to the program. I fully expect to be putting South Carolina with the elite teams in the next few years. As for who they would replace you don't have to look any further than the program they just beat.

Wow! Now the MAC really is a mess

MAC AthleticsRemember how I said the Mid-American Conference could end up being a mess by the end of the weekend?

You know, Central Michigan had to beat Toledo, Northern Illinois had to beat Ball State, Bowling Green had to lose to Akron, Ohio U. had to beat Buffalo and Miami of Ohio just had to sit there and watch the fun while they smacked Temple around. You write about things like this, but you never think they're actually going to happen. Too many things have to go right.

THE SEC TODAY: WEEK NINE.

SEC FootballPrevious Week Overview: The dream lives on for Alabama and anyone who had the insight to predict them as SEC champs in August. Last week Tennessee came to Tuscaloosa and learned that the karma is with the Tide this season. A fumble out of the end zone started it and the Bama kicker ended it as Alabama took full control of the SEC West division. They now have two relatively easy games and should be 9-0 as they once again are at home when LSU comes to town. A win here could very well clinch the West and a spot in the title game.

In other action,  SEC East leader Georgia suffered a serious blow to its title hopes when star QB Shockley was knocked out of action during a tougher than expected battle with Arkansas. This is bad news for the upcoming week when Florida takes on the Bulldogs in The Cocktail Party. But its good news as Shockley will reportedly be ready for action to take on Auburn. With Georgia holding a 2 game lead in the division don't be surprised if the Gators take a bite out of that lead this week as they are the only team left with a chance and Georgia has a game they can still lose.
