After Thursday practice, South Carolina Gamecock Head Coach Steve Spurrier announced that Blake Mitchell will be under center for the home opener for the Cocks on September 1st against Central Florida.

In comments published by the AP, Spurrier noted, "Blake's earned it and he's our starter... obviously if he plays well he will be the quarterback for the entire season barring injury. Good news did not befall the citizens of Stillwater as fall camp opened for the Cowboys.  Seymore Shaw, the school's top returning rusher has announced his transfer to Central Oklahoma, a NCAA Division II University.

Cowboy Coach Mike Gundy noted,  "He made a decision on his own that in the circumstances that he's under at this time, he felt that his best opportunity to play for his senior year would be somewhere else... I can't honestly say whether it will be good or bad for him. I know that he made his decision because he didn't want to wait around to see if he could play here this year. And under the circumstances he's in, he felt like he should move on and try to find somewhere to play right away. That's really all there is to it right now."

Conference play intensified over the past week in the MAC with divisional races starting to heat up, highlighted by the MAC East showdown between Ohio and Marshall. In a hard fought, defensive effort, the Thundering Herd demonstrated that they were not ready to relinquish control of the division despite the gallant efforts of a vastly improved pack of Ohio Bobcats.
