 Looking at Notre Dame's schedule before the season began led many Irish fans to simply hope for a .500 season. With the likes of perennial powerhouses USC, Tennessee and Michigan entrenched every year, Irish faithful have become pessimistic in the team's search for important post season play. Add in the pressure of a new head coach, who despite numerous Super Bowl rings never coached a college game in his life, and an inconsistent starting quarterback, things in South Bend didn't look good.

On Saturday, Minnesota running back Laurence Maroney came to Penn State as the Big 10's leading rusher and was stirring up some attention as a Heisman Trophy candidate. Maroney's seat at the Downtown Athletic Club on December 10th may now beup for grabs. The Gopher back was held to just 48 yards and did not reach the end zone as the Nittany Lions won the game 44-14.
NC State travels to Georgia Tech on Thursday night to kickoff a very important ACC football weekend, featuring four matchups that will go a long way to deciding where teams fall in the ACC this year. The highlight of the weekend comes when Virginia travels to Boston College, as the Eagles look to prove themselves in the ACC and the Cavaliers look to avenge an upset from the Terps last week. Coming off a difficult overtime home loss to Michigan State last weekend, Notre Dame (2-1) travels to the Pacific Northwest to battle the Washington Huskies led by former Irish head coach Tyrone Willingham. Willingham was relieved of his coaching duties after a mediocre three year tenure in South Bend featuring a 21-16 overall record and a sub .500 home record, more than enough reason for the Irish alumni to demand his dismissal.
