Previous Week Overview: Arizona State took control of the game for three quarters and appeared on their way to victory. Leading 17-7 in the 4th, the Devils lined up for a field goal that would extend the lead. Instead, the kick was blocked and returned for a touchdown starting a 28 point 4th quarter for LSU as the Tigers won in a shoot out 35-31. It was a tough game to lose for the Devils and puts LSU squarely into the national title picture.
In other action, South Carolina went into Athens and surprisingly played Georgia evenly for the whole game losing 17-15. You've got to consider Spurrier a force in the SEC already in only his first season at the helm. A win at home over Alabama immediately makes them a contender for the division. Finally, Vanderbilt has become the surprise of the early season with another come from behind victory this time at a tough Fayetteville. Vandy scored with 26 seconds remaining to seal the victory 28-24 over the shocked Razorbacks.
This Weeks Action: (All times Eastern) Game Of The Week 8:00 PM Tennessee at Florida: The rematch from last year's controversial call is upon us. This one could get nasty on a fan level as the bad blood has flowed even before Tennessee's fortunate win at home last season. Now the scene changes to Gainesville and a packed house of angry and loud Gator fans. Both teams return most of its starters from last season so look for another shoot out and a last minute drive by the last team with the football Tennessee 30 Florida 33 Conference Matchups 12:30 PM Mississippi at Vanderbilt: A battle of the unbeatens? Who would have thunk it? Surprising Vanderbilt is 2-0 after two great come from behind road wins over quality opponents. Ole Miss struggled with Memphis for their only win. I expect a similar type game as this one goes down to the wire once again only with Vanderbilt coming out on the short end. Mississippi 26 Vanderbilt 24 3:30 PM Alabama at South Carolina: The Alabama offense continues to struggle and make mistakes against inferior opposition as they had to come back from a 21-10 deficit last week. But the defense, which has stepped up as the conference's best, led the way to victory. The matchup this week is a classic as they have to go into South Carolina and face the Spurrier offense. It won't be easy but as long as Alabama avoids costly mistakes their defense should be able to keep the Gamecocks under control and allow QB Brodie Croyle to get the offense enough points.
Alabama 21 South Carolina 17 Non-Conference Matchups 1:00 PM Louisiana Monroe at #7 Georgia: 0-2 LA - Monroe head into Georgia as a tune up for the Bulldogs. Monroe was shut out at Wyoming so expect similar results for them this week UL Monroe 0 Georgia 41 2:30 PM Ball State at Auburn: 0-2 Ball State travels to Auburn for the Tigers tune up. Ball State has given up 56 and 40 points respectively in their two losses and I don't see any reason to think Auburn won't post similar scoreboard numbers. Ball St 7 Auburn 44 6:45 PM Kentucky at Indiana: This border battle has given us some entertaining games in the past and I don't expect anything different here. Indiana barely got by Nicholls State last week and Kentucky received a scare from Idaho State. If anything these two teams present an even matchup going into the game. Kentucky 20 Indiana 24 8:00 PM Mississippi St. at Tulane: This is a very tough situation for Tulane as they belatedly open their season against Mississippi State in a game switch to Shreveport, La. Tulane is expected to challenge for their conference crown and we have so far seen teams from the New Orleans area respond well to their adversities. Tulane matches up well here after seeing Mississippi State lose badly to Auburn and I see them pulling off the emotional victory. Mississippi St 21 Tulane 24 10:15 PM Arkansas at #1 USC: A tough situation for Arkansas after losing unexpectedly to Vanderbilt awaits them in the form of budding dynasty and unbeatable Southern Cal. We still haven't seen how well this years Southern Cal team will perform as they only have a tune up win over Hawaii under their belt. The oddsmakers have installed the Trojans as an incredible 31 point favorite heading into battle. Arkansas 20 USC 44 Team Of The Week Week 1 Wyoming +24 over Florida Win Week 2 Arizona State -1 over LSU Loss You've got to be somewhat surprised that Tennessee is getting 6 points in its battle with Florida. These teams always bring it right down to the wire and with the high expectations at Tennessee there is no reason to believe that this game will be any different. Take the Vols and hold your breath in this roller coaster ride. |
