Non-BCS Sun Belt Conference

Florida Atlantic 28, Louisiana-Lafayette 10: Howard Schnellenberger led FAU
to its first Sun Belt Conference victory, thanks to quarterback Danny
Embick, who accounted for all four Owls (1-5, 1-0) touchdowns — three
passing and one rushing. Louisiana-Lafayette (1-04, 0-1)  actually led 10-7
at the half.

Arkansas 44, Louisiana-Monroe 15: The Indians (2-4, 2-0) were never in
their non-conference matchup with the Razorbacks, falling behind 23-8 by the
half.

Conference USA

No. 3 Virginia Tech 41, Marshall 3: The Thundering Herd (2-3) were nothing
more than an appetizer to the Hokies, who scored 17 third-quarter points in
three minutes, 29 seconds.

Houston 35, Tulane 14: Ryan Gilbert scored for 130 yards and two touchdowns
for the Cougars (3-2, 2-1), who remained in a first-place tie in the West
Division. Tulane (2-2, 1-1) continued its itinerant existence since
Hurricane Katrina, playing a home game in Lafayette, La., which was in
Florida.

Southern Methodist 28, Alabama-Birmingham 27: The Mustangs claimed a major
victory as Bobby Chase caught Jerad Romo's 31-yard touchdown pass as time
expired. SMU (2-4, 1-2) started the winning drive on its own 20 with :22
seconds left. UAB took a 27-22 lead on Dan Burks' 13-yard run with 3:38 left
in the game. The Blazers dropped to 3-2, 1-1 in C-USA.

Central Florida 38, Memphis 17: The Golden Knights (3-2, 2-0) won their
third straight contest, whipping conference favorite Memphis and taking
control of the East Division. Freshman Kevin Smith had 164 yards and a
touchdown, as UCF became the third NCAA team to win three straight games one
season after going winless. Memphis (2-3, 1-2) got 136 yards rushing and a
touchdown out of senior DeAngelo Williams. He entered the game as Division
I-A's leading rusher.

East Carolina 41, Rice 28: ECU quarterback James Pinkney passed for a
career-high 355 yards as the Pirates (2-3, 1-1) evened their record in C-USA
play. Rice (0-4, 0-2) had a 28-24 lead before the Pirates scored 17
unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

Tulsa 34, Southern Miss 10: Golden Hurricane quarterback Paul Smith
accounted for four touchdowns — three rushing and one passing — as they
improved to 3-3, 2-1 in their first season in C-USA. The loss was the Golden
Eagles' (2-2, 1-1) just their sixth C-USA home loss in the past decade.

Mid-American Conference

Ball State 60, Western Michigan 57 (5 OT): The longest game in MAC history
ended with Ball State kicker Brian Jackson's 30-yard field goal in the fifth
overtime.

Ball State (1-4, 1-1) had not won since last November and snapped a
five-game losing streak.

The teams combined for 1,090 yards in total offense and 16 touchdowns. At
four hours, it was the longest NCAA game this season and two overtimes short
of the NCAA record.

Western Michigan dropped to 3-3, 1-2 in MAC play.

Toledo 30, Eastern Michigan 3: The Rockets (4-1, 2-0) remained undefeated
in MAC play, thanks to 159 yards rushing from Trinity Dawson.

Andrew Wellock kicked a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter for
Eastern Michigan (3-3, 2-1), capping a 13-play, 75-yard drive. The Rockets
held the Eagles to 101 yards rushing.

Bowling Green 38, Ohio 14: Omar Jacobs' 381 yards passing, along with two
touchdowns, kept the Falcons (3-2, 2-0) undefeated in MAC action.

Austen Everson threw for 171 yards with two interceptions and Jordan Meyers
returned a blocked punt 15 yards for a score for Ohio (2-3, 1-1), which
managed only 68 yards rushing.

Akron 13, Buffalo 7: A Brett Biggs touchdown and two Jason Swiger field
goals were all the Zips (3-2, 2-1) needed to beat hapless Buffalo (0-5,
0-2).

Maryland 38, Temple 7: Mario Merrills ran for three touchdowns, leading
Maryland past Temple (0-6).

The Owls will join the Mid-American Conference for the 2007 season and
haven't made a positive impression on their new league. Temple has been
outscored 297-63 in its first season since being kicked out of the Big East
Conference.

Central Michigan 14, Army 10: Taking a break from MAC action, Kent Smith
recovered his own fumble and scored from 2-yards out to seal CMU's victory.
Central Michigan is 3-3 overall, it's third road win of 2005. Army fell to
0-5, it's 10th straight defeat.

Western Athletic Conference

Utah State 24, San Jose State 17: Utah State (2-2, 1-1) got three
scores from Kevin Robinson, including an 87-yard punt return. San Jose State
(1-4, 0-2) dropped its second straight WAC contest.

Nevada 62, Idaho 14: B.J. Mitchell put together a stellar night for the
Wolfpack (3-2, 2-0), rushing for 149 yards and four touchdowns. Nevada's
defense victimized the Vandals (1-2, 1-5) for two defensive touchdowns.

Louisiana Tech 46, Hawai'i 14: Normally-pass happy Tech (2-2, 2-0) got a
career-high 155 yards rushing from Mark Dillard, along with two touchdowns.
The defeat of the Warriors (1-4, 1-2) kept the Bulldogs in a first-place tie
with Nevada.

Boise State 21, Portland State 14: Venturing outside of WAC action, the
Broncos (3-2, 1-0) improved their nation-best home winning streak to 27
games. The Broncos did trail 14-7 at halftime to the Division I-AA school.

Fresno State 37, New Mexico State 7: Fresno State opened WAC action in fine
fashion, as Bryson Smith and Wendell Mathis each rushed for 105 yards for
the Bulldogs (3-1, 1-0). The Aggies (0-6, 0-2) have not won since joining
the WAC, after spending last year in the Sun Belt Conference.

Mountain West Conference

Texas Christian 28, Wyoming 14: The Horned Frogs (5-1, 4-0), who received
55 points in the USA Today Coaches Poll on Monday, needed a 17-point second
quarter to distance themselves from the Cowboys (4-2, 2-1), who were trying
to gain a foothold in the conference title race. TCU has 13 takeaways in the
past two games and is No. 1 in the nation in turnover ratio.

Colorado State 21, Utah 17: Colorado State (3-2, 2-0) held Utah (3-3, 1-2)
out of the end zone on four straight plays inside the 1-yard line with time
winding down to preserve its victory over the Utes.

Brigham Young 27, New Mexico 24: BYU (2-3, 1-2) scored a pair of

field goal with just nine seconds remaining in the game to post victory over
the Aztecs (2-4, 1-2).

Navy 27, Air Force 24: The Midshipmen nailed a 46-yard field goal with one
second remaining in regulation of this non-conference game. In all
non-league games, the MWC is 12-12. The MWC is 4-5 in road/neutral games vs.
automatic-qualifying BCS conferences and 5-7 overall.
