Virginia's huge upset of Florida State highlighted an interesting ACC weekend that shook up the picture in the Conference, and left a lot of questions still to be answered. With the Seminoles loss, they leave the door open for a few teams to try and come back and catch them, including the likes of Boston College and Maryland. Virginia Tech, thanks to an off-week, remains the only unbeaten team in Conference play. Let's figure out what happened, and what it means to the rest of the year...In their traditional Thursday night matchup, Clemson showed considerable strength as they dominated NC State in Raleigh, winning 31-10. The win here basically puts both teams out of contention. With only two losses in the conference, the Wolfpack still had an outside chance at solid position in the division, but now, with both teams at three losses, neither team has a very good chance at being anywhere near the top of the division. Right now the only thing both teams have to look forward to is trying to shake up the division a little bit, as they still have key divisional matchups. Both teams would really have to come close to winning out to do anything major this year. In a game that was much closer than most people would have figured it would be, Wake Forest traveled to Boston College and scared the Eagles, as the home team only came away with a 5 point victory, 35-30. The game does scare Eagle fans, as it causes them to worry about how soft their team is, and make them worry about their ability to give Florida State a run at the end of the year. The other problem is that the game was at home, and it was the first time this year that Boston College's defense really looked vulnerable. Before this, the Eagles easily looked like they had the second best defense in the Conference, but now it raises a lot of questions to be answered. Unfortunately, Wake Forest cannot afford to just play teams well, they need wins, and they need them quickly. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future. Boston College still has a very good shot at the ACC Championship Game, especially with the Florida State loss, while Wake Forest really only has a chance to ruin other team's shots, but technically they still have an outside shot. In the most pointless game of the weekend, Miami destroyed Temple in a game that really had no effect on the picture in the ACC. The win only gives Miami another victory, which will go towards their total to get them into a bowl game, and possibly even a BCS bid if they can get one. Needless to say, 34-3 is complete domination, but Miami easily could have put up a lot more points on the Owls this weekend. They hope to build up some momentum going into a very important matchup against Georgia Tech this weekend. Right now, they really are just relying on a loss from Virginia Tech to get them back in the race for the top of the Coastal Division. In Duke, Georgia Tech picked up a 35-10 victory over the Blue Devils that leaves the Yellow Jackets at .500 in Conference play. Right now, they still have a long way to go to catch up to Miami and Virginia Tech at the top of the division. While the Yellow Jackets were a favorite pick in the beginning of the year, they seem to be facing a big uphill battle for the rest of the season. Unless Reggie Ball can get back on track fast, and the defense can wake up from whatever sleep they've been all season, then the Yellow Jackets are only going to find themselves in the middle of the Coastal Division at the end of the season. Everything hinges on the play of Reggie Ball, and his health, and what he can do for the remainder of the season. In the big surprise of the season, Virginia took down Florida State at home, 26-21. The big surprise here is that it wasn't a shootout, which is what you should have expected from these two games before we entered the weekend. Florida State's defense played like it should against the Cavaliers, but the big surprise was Florida State's inability to get the ball into the endzone. Virginia dominated the first half, and were up 23-10 going into halftime. Their defense stepped up in the second half, and they held of Florida State to complete the upset. While the loss doesn't hurt Florida State that much because of their big wins over Boston College and Miami earlier this season, but the win does keep Virginia in the background of the Coastal Division, and still gives them hope of sitting near the top of the division. This game leaves the Atlantic division up in the air, and gives Boston College and Florida State an even shot, while it leaves the Cavaliers with hope for the rest of the season. This coming weekend will go a long way towards how the ACC is going to play out for the remainder of the season. With 5 ACC matchups this weekend, things might finally start to shuffle out at the top of each division. It will be interesting to see how things play out this weekend, look for a big Thursday night matchup between Virginia Tech and Maryland. |
